A spray tan solution contains a chemical called dihydroxyacetone, or DHA for short. This chemical reacts with the outermost layer of your skin and causes the skin cells to darken. The higher the percentage of DHA the darker the tan.
The classic solution are fully developed after 8 hours and come in different DHA levels which will determine the richness of the tan. For example a light solution contains 6% DHA, a medium 9% , 12% for the dark and 14% for extra dark. That usually makes it pretty simple. Normally my clients sleep in their classic tans and rinse in the morning.
For the rapid solutions the DHA content is 14% and the outcome is determined by the amount of time it is left on the skin. For example if you rinse after 1-2 hours your results will be very light. 3-4 hours will come out to a medium tan and 4-5 hours will result in a darker tan.
When choosing a rapid tan you have to be aware that the time that you rinse is crucial for the outcome, so following instructions is really important.
Your tan usually lasts between 5-10 days and gradually fades. Yet the longevity highly depends on your lifestyle and skin care routine.
Tanning two days before your event is recommended. It gives the tan enough time to fully develop.
Make sure you hydrate and moisturize the days leading up to your tan. Shave the day before and exfoliate prior to your session. The day of the tan please make sure to not use any deodorant or moisturizer since anything on your skin acts like a barrier and will keep the tan from developing.
Hydration is key to an even tan! Make sure you keep yourself and your skin hydrated. Try to avoid chlorine, or any clothing that is very tight and will rub the skin.
